Winterize your second home or vacant homes, which saves fuel and prevents possible water damage.
Shut-off water when not in the house. This will prevent potential flooding from a burst pipe.
Install a low water cut off safety switch on your boiler (which is now code for new boilers). It keeps the boiler off when a pipe bursts on your heating system, preventing further damage to the system.
Add antifreeze to you heating system to prevent burst pipes.
Install a temperature alert that will call your cell phone or other house when the temperature in the second home goes below 45 degrees. (Available at Williams Lumber or online).

Steam System: Inspect your boiler for any signs of leakage or rust. Repair these leaks before they become a major problem.
Steam System: Remember to flush out your Low Water Cut Off once a week. This keeps the float from getting stuck. The float turns the boiler off when a low water condition develops. If the control is not working, replace it. Never by-pass or jump out this control or any other control.
